Vembu BDR Suite v4.0 – Focus on Hyper-V and manageability of the product

Quick VM Recovery Report

From v4.0, you will get a report for Quick VM recovery process with details like VM Name, Recovery point, Start and End time, target hypervisor and the status of the recovery.

This feature is really important when you wish to provide SLA to your business. We should know how long it takes to restore a VM/Application/Server or database. So I really welcome this feature in the product

Enhanced VM configuration Possibility

While performing Live Recovery to VMware, you will be getting an option to configure specifications of the virtual hardware like Socket & Core Counts | Memory | Hard disk provision type | Network adapter

There is always a service request where you must create a development copy of the VMs, but then do you need a development copy of the same size? Normally not. So here one can use this feature to restore a machine as development VM with different configuration and test some features and destroy it. It is very cool feature. Do think about it.

Reconnection for VMware & Hyper-V backups

If a VMware or Hyper-V VM backup job gets interrupted due to network failure, reconnection attempts will be made to continue the data transfer.

So this is very important and as Backup administrator, you might be aware of how painful it can be when the backup job is interrupted due to any network blip between VM and Vembu Server. This would mean Back job is failed and there is nothing to we can do till the next backup cycle runs. Here is the feature for your rescue. Backup job will continue to attempt network connection and resume the backup job. Sounds really impressive.

Protecting data as soon as it is added

Handling new disk addition. Any newly added disk to a VM on VMware/Hyper-V was backed up only on the next full backup. From v4.0, the new disk additions are designed to be detected and considered for back up on the next incremental schedule.

In v4.0 now your data is immediately backup as part of next backup cycle. So you don’t have to wait for another full backup. This was a feature missing and it assures customers your data is always available for restore. Data protection strategy end to end with full reliability for restoring up to last backup cycle.

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Support

Support for backup and recovery of VMs running on Hyper-V Cluster setups. The scheduled backups will not be interrupted even when the VMs move from one node to another for High Availability.

This feature brings Vembu in the much bigger segment of the Backup product. This feature only continue to add value to the customer. Vembu can assure it customer not only data protection but also aligns with the customer’s high availability SLA. This feature means customer not only get High availability but also has ensure VM is backed up irrespective of its cluster in the cluster.

Checksum Based Incremental Tracking for Hyper-V

The modifications made on the VMs running on Hyper-V servers are by default tracked using CBT technology. When CBT fails, the checksum-based incremental tracking is leveraged ensuring seamless backups.

If you are using Vembu product you might be aware the CBT driver was exclusively written by Vembu in the past. This driver has allowed incremental backup of VM. Initially, Microsoft didn’t release any CBT driver as was available with VMware. Now the time has come even the Checksum based tracking is integrated into the product. Do note this is a fallback mechanism when CBT fails. This is a very cool addition as it would ensure backup data is in line with settings configured in the Backup job. Imagine a situation where CBT fails, in this potential backup job also fails and we are at risk when it comes to data protection.

New Credentials Manager

Credentials of the VM hosts, guest VMs and physical computers can now be managed using the Credentials Manager, avoiding the need to enter the credentials every time.

Believe me, it makes life easy. One place to manage credentials. Though this feature was missing for long but always welcome. Centralized management helps in changing the password in a single location and track them properly.

Above are the strong reasons to upgrade your product to v4.0. It is a seamless upgrade. Have a look at the detailed migration guide here

If you are thinking about buying this product I strongly suggest to download the trial product and start using it. It is a simple interface and allows your data protection in a simple and lucid way.
