Zerto Virtual Replication 02–Custom Installation (Production use case)

Custom installation is preferred while you are configuring production set up of ZVR. During custom installation many fields and option become visible which are important to be set right for production setup. Though these fields can be configured using advance setting option If you follow express installation

Initial screen first three screens are same as described in Express installation.

Below screen select custom installation

Select the IP to be used by vCenter to talk to ZVM. In production it is more than likely to have more than one NIC and or more than one IP. This screen provides you the option to select the correct IP

In above Figure 02, Port:9080 is the port used for communication between VSS Agent, Zerto Internal API and ZVM. Port:9669 is the port used for communicating between vSphere Client and ZVM. Port:9081 is the port used for communicating between ZVM. This port must be opened on physical firewall. As ideally two sites will be separated by WAN.

In Figure 03 select system account or local account. If possible try not to select AD account. Idea is this DR solution. It shouldn’t have dependence on external factors

In below screen i.e. Figure 04 – Database Selection dialog is displayed. Information required by Zerto Virtual Replication is stored in a database embedded in the Zerto Virtual Manager.

Database includes

1) Details of the site where the Zerto Virtual Manager is installed,

2) Details of the Virtual Replication Appliances (VRAs) and the volumes they use, and points-in-time recorded for recovery

It is recommended to use embedded database. As ZVM needs DB up and running to initiate DR process. If DB is unavailable during DR, recovery cannot proceed.

In below Figure 05 provide site information. All the fields are free text. Purpose of each field is to identify details of the site. All these fields are displayed in Zerto DR UI.

In Figure:06 Select Checkbox “Enable VMware vCloud BC/DR” to establish connection between ZVR and vCD

Following screen does the pre-requisite on behalf of you. Once result is passed, installation of  ZVM proceeds

After Installation is done, please confirm that Anti-Virus is configured not to scan installation directory of Zerto. If vSphere client is opened, please close and re-open so that Zerto plug-in gets automatically installed as shown below.

Follow this process on each site where vCenter is installed. Once installation is completed configure this VM’s start up priority to High.

In next blog I’ll be sharing how to install VRA
